Contact improvisation jams & classes in London

Contact improvisation is a movement practice built on a shared point of contact: two people lean, roll, lift and give weight, following momentum rather than choreography. It's danced barefoot and usually in silence or to quiet music.

London has weekly jams — open floors where anyone can dance with anyone — plus classes for people who want the technique first. Jams often ask for some prior experience; classes never do.

Common questions

What is contact improvisation?
A duet form developed by Steve Paxton in the 1970s in which dancers share weight through a moving point of contact. Nothing is set in advance: the dance follows physics — momentum, gravity and the surface between two bodies.
Is contact improv a beginner-friendly practice?
Classes are, and are the right place to start: you learn rolling, giving weight and how to keep each other safe. Open jams assume you already have those basics, so check the listing before turning up to one.
Is contact improvisation intimate?
It involves a lot of physical contact but is not romantic or sexual, and consent is explicit throughout — you can decline a dance or end one at any point without explanation.
