5Rhythms is a moving meditation created by Gabrielle Roth: every class travels through flowing, staccato, chaos, lyrical and stillness, a wave that takes about two hours. A teacher holds the room and offers a focus, but there are no steps to copy.

London has one of the largest 5Rhythms communities anywhere, with weekly classes across the city, monthly longer waves and regular weekend workshops. Drop in to any class marked open level.

What are the five rhythms?
Flowing (continuous, circular, grounded), staccato (defined, rhythmic, expressive), chaos (letting go of control), lyrical (light and playful) and stillness (settling, breath). Danced in sequence they make a wave, the basic form of every class.
Is 5Rhythms suitable for beginners?
Yes — most weekly classes are open level and a good share of the room is new. There is no technique to learn and no partner needed; the teacher's instructions are invitations rather than steps.
How is 5Rhythms different from ecstatic dance?
5Rhythms is a taught practice with a fixed map and certified teachers who guide the room through the wave. Ecstatic dance is usually DJ-led and unguided. Both are sober, barefoot and freeform.
