Ecstatic dance in London
Ecstatic dance is a freeform dance floor with no talking, no alcohol and no steps to learn. A DJ builds a wave from slow and grounded to fast and loud and back down again, and everyone moves however their body wants to for a couple of hours.
London has one most nights of the week, from sunrise sessions to Friday and Saturday floors of two hundred people. Many open with cacao or a short warm-up circle and close with a lie-down.

Common questions
- What is ecstatic dance?
- A sober, freeform dance practice: no choreography, no conversation on the floor, and no drinking. The DJ's set is arranged as a journey through tempos so the room moves together without anyone leading. It grew out of the 5Rhythms and conscious dance scenes of the 1970s and 80s.
- Do I need to be able to dance?
- No. There is nothing to get right and nobody is watching — most people dance with their eyes half closed. Walking, stretching or lying down at the edge of the room all count.
- What are the rules at an ecstatic dance?
- Three, almost everywhere: no talking on the dance floor, no shoes, and no alcohol or drugs. Dancing with someone else is welcome but always invited rather than assumed — a hand raised palm-out is the usual way to decline, and it isn't taken personally.
